On 8 November 2013, one of the worst storms on record left a trail of destruction across the Philippines, with millions of people affected and several thousands mourning the loss of loved ones.

MV co-workers from Australia recently returned from a trip to the Philippines that had already been planned before the Typhoon hit.  They were able to provide the equivalent of NZ$18,000 initial relief funding to MV’s Field Coordinators in Cebu, Mindanao & Mindoro, who were in turn able to distribute the funds into some of the area most needed.

During their time on the islands of Luzon, Cebu, Bohol, Mindanao & Mindoro they met with over 100 pastors and leaders and also delivered Basic Trauma Response training to prepare the pastors to help their affected communities.

Through the generous donations received so far, MVNZ has sent a further NZ$5,300 to our Field Coordinators as they continue to co-ordinate the relief effort in their areas, with food crops and water supplies having sustained long-term damage.

Missionary Ventures is also in the process of drawing up an International strategy to help with the rehabilitation stage of relief over the coming years – guided by the first-hand reports and advice from our co-workers on the ground.

Ps. Philip Gonzales (Field Coordinator, Mindanao), is revisiting devastated areas of Leyte and Tacloban with a trauma response team delivering psychological first aid and distributing much needed relief goods (food and clothing).

Ps Rolly Vasey, (Field Coordinator, Cebu), travelled to Tacloban & Samar with his wife and a small team of pastors to distribute relief goods (mainly food supplies) and met with pastors and churches.  They will also be returning to earthquake-affected Bohol to follow up with relief work.

Ps Danny, (Field Coordinator, Luzon), has travelled back to Mindoro with a small team to distribute relief goods and building materials to the churches and communities badly hit by the typhoon in Southern Mindoro.

Once again, thank you for your prayers and for partnering with us as we help to provide relief to the Philippines following this major disaster.
